Taiwan Condemns Chinese Coast Guard Patrols as ‘Provocative’. Taiwan has accused China of carrying out a “provocative act” after Chinese Coast Guard vessels entered waters east of the island during what Beijing called a special law-enforcement operation. The move came after Japan and the Philippines announced plans to begin formal talks on maritime boundary delimitation, a decision China believes involves waters near Taiwan. Taiwan’s Coast Guard responded by deploying its own ships and said the Chinese vessels were forced to leave restricted waters. Defence Minister Wellington Koo described the patrols as both a challenge to Taiwan’s sovereignty and a form of cognitive warfare, accusing Beijing of trying to gradually extend its influence over the region. Taiwan says Chinese pressure has intensified in recent months, including increased activity around the Pratas Islands and the deployment of research vessels near Taiwanese waters. The island’s military and Coast Guard are now working closely together as tensions continue to rise across the Taiwan Strait.
