Stay Hydrated: Sauna Mishap Highlights Risks of Dehydration. A woman in her 70s suffered a heart attack and multi-organ failure after experiencing severe heat stroke in a sauna, doctors reported. Found unconscious in her gym’s indoor sauna, she endured a heart attack, seizures, liver injury, and kidney injury, requiring 12 days of hospital care, Sky News reports. Paramedics recorded her body temperature at 42°C, with critically low blood pressure and a dangerously fast heart rate upon arrival. The patient, who had type 1 diabetes and thyroid issues, had been stretching for 45 minutes before entering the sauna. She regained consciousness two hours after her body temperature normalized but remained confused and drowsy for two days. After 26 days, doctors found she had returned to her baseline health but still experienced persistent fatigue. Heat stroke linked to saunas is rare, with only around 10 documented cases globally, three of which were fatal. The patient attributed her ordeal to inadequate hydration before using the sauna and urged fellow users to drink enough water. Medical staff highlighted the importance of hydration and regular monitoring of saunas to prevent similar incidents. ”I feel very lucky to have recovered fully and cannot thank the medical team enough," the patient said, calling her experience a life-changing lesson.
