Bogus Email Linked to Chinese Hackers Targets US Trade Talks. US authorities are investigating a malicious email that posed as a message from Republican Congressman John Moolenaar, reportedly part of a Chinese-linked hacking campaign. The Wall Street Journal says the email, sent in July to trade groups, law firms and government agencies, carried malware traced to APT41, a group widely believed to be tied to Chinese intelligence. Moolenaar, a vocal critic of Beijing and chair of a committee on US-China competition, dismissed the attack as another attempt by China to steal American strategy, vowing: "We will not be intimidated.” The phishing attempt came just before US-China trade talks in Sweden, raising concerns that hackers were seeking insights into White House negotiations. The FBI says it is working with partners to pursue those responsible. Beijing, meanwhile, denies involvement, insisting it opposes all forms of cyberattacks.
