At 23 years old, Morgan Godvin sold heroin to a friend who overdosed and died. After being charged with drug delivery resulting in death, she served five years in a federal prison. Now released, Morgan raises awareness about the rise of drug-induced homicide prosecutions. Her drug use turned into severe addiction, leading to multiple overdoses and poor treatment access. In 2014, after her mother’s overdose, Morgan sold heroin to a friend who sadly died. After being arrested and charged, Morgan spent years in various prisons, learning Spanish and gaining insight into the justice system. Upon release, she enrolled at Portland State University, studied abroad, and interned in Argentina. Now, she's pursuing a PhD in Global Health, focusing on overdose prevention. Despite her progress, her criminal record still poses challenges. Morgan serves on Oregon’s Alcohol and Drug Policy Commission and advocates for harm reduction. Despite all the challenges she has faced in the past, Morgan is optimistic about her future stating: "I'm lucky to be alive and have a meaningful life,".
