Home Office Squandered Billions On Asylum Hotels, MPs Say. The Home Office has been accused of “squandering” billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money on asylum accommodation, according to a damning report by MPs. The Home Affairs Committee said flawed contracts and poor management had left the department reliant on hotels as long-term housing for asylum seekers, instead of using them as short-term solutions. Costs have now tripled to more than £15 billion. The report found that inadequate oversight allowed major failings to go unchecked and that some private providers still owe millions in excess profits. Around a third of the 103,000 asylum seekers currently in government accommodation are being housed in 210 hotels across the UK. A Home Office spokesperson said the government was “furious” about the situation and insisted it remains committed to ending the use of asylum hotels by 2029.
