US Expands List of Chinese Firms with Alleged Military Links. The United States has added several major Chinese companies, including Alibaba and electric vehicle giant BYD, to a Pentagon list of firms allegedly connected to China’s military. The Department of Defense says the designation is intended to warn American businesses and investors about potential risks when dealing with these companies. However, inclusion on the list does not automatically result in sanctions or a ban. China has strongly criticized the move, calling it discriminatory and insisting that Chinese firms comply with the laws of the countries where they operate. Alibaba rejected the allegation, saying there is no basis for its inclusion and that it is neither a military company nor part of any military-civil fusion program. The company also warned it may pursue legal action. Other newly added firms include Baidu, Nio, and aircraft manufacturer Comac. The updated list now contains more than 80 companies, with Huawei, Tencent, DJI, and battery maker CATL remaining among those previously designated by the Pentagon.
