In response, Owens rejected the lawsuit, calling it a public relations stunt and accusing the Macrons of trying to smear her character. She also stated that she wasn’t aware of the lawsuit’s imminent filing, even though legal communications between the parties had been ongoing since January. A spokesperson for Owens characterized the lawsuit as an effort to silence her and an attack on her First Amendment rights as an independent journalist. In their statement, the Macrons emphasized that they had given Owens multiple chances to retract her defamatory statements, but she refused to do so, leading to the lawsuit.
