Macron Files Defamation Lawsuit Against Candace Owens Over Claim France's First Lady Was Born Male. French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte filed a defamation lawsuit in the U.S. against right-wing podcaster Candace Owens over her claims that France’s first lady was born male. The Macrons took legal action on Wednesday, with a complaint filed in Delaware Superior Court, accusing Owens of spreading false and harmful claims to boost her podcast’s popularity and expand her fan base. Owens’ assertions included the claim that Brigitte Macron, 72, was originally named Jean-Michel Trogneux, which is the name of her older brother. The Macrons argue that Owens has waged a harmful campaign of lies, including attacking their appearance, marriage, and personal history, creating a “grotesque narrative” intended to degrade and humiliate them. In response, Owens rejected the lawsuit, calling it a public relations stunt and accusing the Macrons of trying to smear her character. She also stated that she wasn’t aware of the lawsuit’s imminent filing, even though legal communications between the parties had been ongoing since January. A spokesperson for Owens characterized the lawsuit as an effort to silence her and an attack on her First Amendment rights as an independent journalist. In their statement, the Macrons emphasized that they had given Owens multiple chances to retract her defamatory statements, but she refused to do so, leading to the lawsuit.
