Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Scientists Create New Alloy Mesh Tyres To Carry Humans Across Mars

Caption:

NASA and Goodyear are teaming up to create revolutionary tyres for Mars exploration. At NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, engineers tested prototype tyres made with “shape memory alloy” (SMA). These SMA tyres use nickel-titanium to return to their shape after bending or stretching - unlike solid tyres. The tyre design features a flexible, interlocked mesh instead of a traditional solid surface. After months of collaboration, NASA and Goodyear developed SMA tyres designed for extreme Martian terrain. Last year, tests in the UK showed the SMA tyres handled slopes, rocks, and sand with stability and flexibility. NASA confirmed the tyres met all expectations, showing potential for Mars and Moon missions. Beyond tyres, SMA technology could also protect astronaut habitats and lunar structures from impacts.
