After the race, Lyles experienced light-headedness, chest pain, and shortness of breath, requiring assistance from medical personnel. Lyles had aimed for multiple gold medals at these Olympics but had to settle for just one in the 100 meters. He appeared energetic before the race, even though he admitted he was not at his full strength, feeling around 90-95% of his usual capacity. The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee supported Lyles’ decision to compete, stating they followed necessary health protocols and respected his choice. Lyles kept his COVID-19 diagnosis confidential, sharing it only with close contacts to avoid creating panic and maintain a competitive edge. Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, who won the race, noticed Lyles was more withdrawn than usual before the event, but didn’t suspect he was ill.
