Thailand's Top Court Orders Ex-PM Thaksin Back to Jail. Thailand’s Supreme Court has ruled that former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra must serve one year in prison, overturning the hospital stay that allowed him to avoid a jail cell. The court found that Thaksin had unlawfully served part of his reduced sentence in a luxury hospital ward, rather than in prison. The case stems from his earlier corruption conviction during his premiership. The 76-year-old billionaire, ousted in a 2006 coup, spent years in exile before returning in 2023. He was sentenced to eight years, later reduced to one, but spent only a single night in jail before being moved to hospital on health grounds. His daughter Paetongtarn, who recently lost her own leadership post, said she is worried for her father but that the family remains in good spirits. She also pledged to continue leading their Pheu Thai party in opposition. The so-called "14th floor case" has drawn national attention, as many Thais waited to see if the once-powerful leader would finally spend real time behind bars.
