ChatGPT Shares Data On How Many Users Exhibit Psychosis Or Suicidal Thoughts. OpenAI has released new figures estimating how many ChatGPT users show signs of mental health emergencies, such as psychosis, mania or suicidal thoughts. The company said around 0.07% of weekly active users display such signs — a small percentage but one that could still represent hundreds of thousands of people, given ChatGPT’s 800 million weekly users. OpenAI said it has created a global network of more than 170 psychiatrists, psychologists and doctors across 60 countries to help develop appropriate responses within ChatGPT. These include encouraging users to seek professional help and connecting them with crisis resources. Mental health experts welcomed the transparency but urged caution. Dr. Jason Nagata from the University of California, San Francisco, said that even small percentages “represent a large number of people” and warned that AI should not replace human care. OpenAI also said 0.15% of users show signs of suicidal planning or intent prompting updates to ensure ChatGPT responds “safely and empathetically” to sensitive conversations.
