Nepal Lifts Social Media Ban After Deadly Protests. Nepal has scrapped a nationwide ban on social media after violent protests left at least 19 people dead and more than 100 injured. The unrest erupted on Monday, when thousands of mostly young demonstrators stormed parliament in Kathmandu, demanding the government lift restrictions on 26 platforms, including Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. Protesters also called for action against corruption, accusing politicians’ families of living lavish lifestyles funded by graft. Police used water cannons, batons and rubber bullets to disperse crowds, with clashes spreading to towns beyond the capital. Some protesters even targeted Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s home in Damak. Facing mounting pressure, the government held an emergency cabinet meeting late Monday and announced the ban’s reversal to “address the demands of Gen Z.” Prime Minister Oli expressed sorrow over the casualties but blamed “vested interest groups” for fueling the violence. Meanwhile, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned over the government’s heavy-handed response.
