UK Economy Stalls With Zero Growth At Start Of Year. The UK economy showed no growth in January, in a weaker-than-expected start to the year. Official figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed that economic output was flat for the month, following modest growth of 0.1% in December. Economists described the figures as disappointing, with the overall economic picture labelled “subdued”. The data covers a period before the outbreak of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which has already triggered an energy shock that could ripple through economies worldwide. Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned earlier this week that the longer the conflict lasts, the more likely it is to affect Britain’s economy. Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the government remained committed to its economic plan to boost growth, cut the cost of living and reduce national debt. The figures show the services sector recorded no growth in January, production fell slightly, while construction was the only sector to expand. Over the three months to January, the economy grew by 0.2%, a slight improvement on the previous period.
