England's Mayors To Be Given Power To Introduce Tourist Tax. Mayors in England are to be given the power to introduce a tourist tax on overnight stays under new government plans. Local leaders would be able to impose an uncapped levy calculated as a percentage of the cost of hotels, bed and breakfasts and other accommodation, rather than charging visitors a fixed fee. The government believes the percentage-based system would help protect cheaper holidays, with individual mayors deciding whether to introduce the levy and how the money raised should be spent. Housing Secretary Angela Rayner is expected to discuss further details with mayors at No 10 North. Hospitality industry leaders have criticised the proposals, warning they could put jobs at risk and increase costs for families holidaying in England. Similar visitor levies already operate in Scotland and several European cities.
