China Exports Surge Despite Trump Tariffs. China’s exports have surged at the start of the year despite rising trade tensions with the United States. Official data shows exports jumped by more than 20% in January and February combined almost three times higher than economists had predicted — putting China on track to beat the record trade surplus it posted in 2025. The figures come ahead of an expected meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in early April. China’s economy is still heavily dependent on exports as it faces weak consumer spending, a shrinking population and an ongoing property crisis. Demand for electronics helped drive the increase, while exports to Europe and Southeast Asia also rose sharply. However, shipments to the United States fell by more than 10% after tariffs imposed by Washington to tackle trade imbalances.
