Apple Surpasses Samsung in Global Smartphone Shipments. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. Apple topped Samsung for the most smartphones shipped around the world in 2023. Apple had 234.6 million mobile shipments, while Samsung had 226.6 million. It's the first time that Apple has ever shipped more phones than Samsung, The Verge reports. Rounding out the top five were Xiaomi, Oppo and Transsion with 145.9 million, 103.1 million and 94.9 million global shipments, respectively. "Not only is Apple the only player in the Top 3 to show positive growth annually, but also bags the number 1 spot annually for the first time ever." "Apple’s ongoing success and resilience is in large part due to the increasing trend of premium devices, which now represent over 20% of the market, fueled by aggressive trade-in offers and interest-free financing plans." IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team research director Nabila Popal, via The Verge. The last time that Samsung was knocked from the top spot was in 2010 when Nokia reigned supreme. Motion came in third, fourth and fifth, respectively. That year, LG Electronics, ZTE and Research in Motion came in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
