Tourist Fined After Jumping Into Rome’s Trevi Fountain. A 30-year-old New Zealand tourist was fined €500 ($524) and banned for life from Rome’s Trevi Fountain after diving into its waters. The incident happened Sunday night when three New Zealanders attempted to wade into the historic fountain before being stopped by police. As authorities escorted them away, one of the tourists broke free and leaped into the fountain, prompting officers to give chase. A spokesperson for Rome’s Capital Police confirmed that "alcohol was definitely involved" in the reckless stunt. The Trevi Fountain, completed in 1762 and restored in 2024, is a frequent site of tourist misbehavior, particularly inspired by scenes from the classic film La Dolce Vita. Each year, Roman police fine multiple visitors for dipping feet or bottles into the fountain, while others attempt to steal some of the €1.5 million in coins tossed in annually for charity. In 2024, Rome introduced measures to manage crowds, limiting access to 400 people at a time from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with discussions ongoing about introducing an entry fee. The New Zealand tourist bypassed security controls by climbing over the fountain’s marble sculptures before plunging into the water. Despite efforts to protect the landmark, the Trevi Fountain remains a hotspot for unruly tourists, leading to repeated fines and restrictions.
