Corbyn Criticises Rayner Over Allotment Land Sales. Jeremy Corbyn has criticised former Labour colleague Angela Rayner for approving the sale of land at eight allotment sites since the general election. Allotments, where residents grow fruit and vegetables, are protected by the Allotment Act 1925 and can only be sold with ministerial approval. The government says such sales are allowed only when “clearly necessary" Writing in The Telegraph, Corbyn, an enthusiastic allotment holder praised “the joy of digging ground for potatoes” and warned that selling sites puts their future at risk. The Islington North MP, who recently launched a new political party, linked the history of allotments to the Enclosure Acts calling them “a grotesque abuse of power” that forced the rural poor into cities. Today, demand for allotments remains high: one in eight people in the UK lack access to a garden and around 100,000 are on waiting lists, some for decades.
