New Prostate Cancer Treatment To Cut Radiotherapy Sessions. Thousands of men in England with prostate cancer will soon be offered an advanced form of radiotherapy that could reduce treatment sessions from 20 to just five. The technique, known as SABR, uses highly targeted radiation to treat cancer more precisely than standard radiotherapy. Doctors say the approach could not only shorten treatment times but also help reduce side effects for patients. SABR is already used for some other cancers, including lung and brain tumours but this is the first time it will be widely available for low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer patients outside clinical trials. Around 55,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in England each year, with roughly 17,500 falling into the low- or intermediate-risk category. NHS England expects all 48 radiotherapy centres across the country to begin offering the treatment within weeks.
