William Byron Wins Daytona 500. Byron secured his first Daytona 500 victory on Feb. 19, CNN reports. The race was supposed to take place on Feb. 18 but was delayed due to heavy rain. Just before Byron's victory, NASCAR waved a caution flag as Ross Chastain veered into the infield grass. The caution flag caused some confusion as to whether Byron took first place, with the 26-year-old asking, "Did we win it? Did we win it?" Crew chief Rudy Fugle verified Byron's victory. "Well, no one told me. And Rudy was crying on the radio, so I was like, ‘Dude, I hope he’s crying for good reason. I guess he was a ball of emotion there, and so I was like ‘Did we actually win or not?’" William Byron, via CNN. Byron's win represents Hendrick Motorsports' ninth Daytona 500 title, CNN reports. Hendrick and Petty Enterprises are now tied for the most wins in the race's history. Hendrick also celebrated its 40th anniversary of participating in the race. Byron dedicated his victory to his father. "I wish my dad was here, he’s sick but this is for him. We’ve been through so much. We sat up in the grandstands together and watched the race. This is so fricking cool.", William Byron, via CNN. THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
