Biden to Announce Sanctions on Russia for Navalny’s Death. On Feb. 19, President Joe Biden confirmed that his administration will announce sanctions on Russia later in the week. The sanctions are the administration's way of holding Russia accountable for the death of Alexei Navalny, a Russian opposition leader. "What I came to tell you was we’d be announcing sanctions on Russia. We’ll have a major package announced on Friday." National Security Council John Kirby also said that the sanctions were in response to the country's continued war with Ukraine. Navalny, 47, who was serving a 30-year sentence "on charges of extremism and fraud that he denied," was transferred to a Russian penal colony in 2023, NBC News reports. On Feb. 16, the penal colony, located above the Arctic Circle, said that Nalvany died. "On February 16, 2024, in penal colony No. 3, convict A.A. Navalny felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness." The prison service for the Yamalo-Nenets region, via statement. No further details have been provided about his death. Navalny's widow, Yulia Navalnaya, claims that her husband was murdered, and Russia is attempting to cover it up. Biden seemed to echo those accusations on Feb. 16. "Make no mistake, Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death. Putin is responsible. What has happened to Navalny is yet more proof of Putin’s brutality." "No one should be fooled — not in Russia, not at home, not anywhere in the world." President Joe Biden, via statement. "Putin does not only target his [the] citizens of other countries, as we’ve seen what’s going on in Ukraine right now, he also inflicts terrible crimes on his own people."
