Eurogamer reported that Wren Brier, the creative director behind the indie hit Unpacking, has criticized Nintendo over the prevalence of copycat games on its Switch eShop. Wren Brier posted on Bluesky, highlighting a series of games on the eShop titled Unpacking. These games were clearly inspired by Witch Beam's award-winning title and used the same trademarked name. On October 26, Unpacking Universe Dreams by CGI Lab appeared on the eShop, inviting players to "explore a whimsical world" and "unpack and arrange items in vibrant locations.". Brier took to Bluesky again, stating that Nintendo has yet to respond to reports of these "egregious scams.". "It's been over two weeks and these are still on the eShop," said Brier. "Nintendo hasn't responded to any of our reports of these egregious scams which are using our trademarked game name and purposely tricking Nintendo customers into buying cheap fakes.". This isn't the first time the Unpacking developers have dealt with copycat scams. In 2022, an imitator was removed from the iOS and Google Play stores after briefly topping their download charts. "If you've happened to catch an ad for a suspiciously similar-looking game to Unpacking on mobile recently, please know that it's not our game," the official Unpacking account explained.
