Caption: Google’s past potential partnership with Tencent revealed in court documents. Eurogamer report the internet giant had proposed to shareholder Tencent, to take over Fortnite and Epic Games. The revelation came to light as part of the ongoing Epic Games vs Google antitrust case. Previously in 2022, Epic had implemented an in-game work around in the Android and iOS versions of Fornite to avoid Google and Apple fees. This led to the platform-holders pulling Fortnite from their storefonts which in turn led to lawsuits filed against them by Epic. The Epic vs Apple case was settled in 2021 with Apple coming out victorious. Epic are now going head to head with Google, and have some juicy paperwork as part of the trial in the form of unredacted documents from Google’s 2018 ‘Project Elektra’ strategy. These reveal Google’s idea to gain either a controlling stake (around $2bn for 20%) in Epic or seek ownership therefore being able to use Fortnite for itself as a ‘leading business driver’. Former Google exec Dave Sobata also stated in an email from the same day that Phil Harrison, ex-head of Stadia had made an alternative proposition to Tencent, in hopes of achieving the share or epic, or a 100% buy out join operation The trial between Epic and Google kicked off on 6 November, and will hopefully reach a verdict before Christmas.
