Caption: Experts Warn Gas Shortages Loom in the EU This Winter. 'The Independent' reports that a new study has warned that countries in Europe may face gas shortages this winter amid increased demand for gas in China. According to energy consultancy Cornwall Insight, China's demand for gas has already climbed by about 6% this year. The reduced competition helped the EU stave off the impact of Russia shutting off pipeline gas as part of its invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022. "In a landscape of increasing global competition, Europe's LNG supply faces growing uncertainty.", "A multitude of factors, from weather patterns to surging demand in Asia, leave Europe open to potential gas shortages if it places its faith in another high-temperature, low-competition winter.", Dr Matthew Chadwick, lead research analyst at Cornwall Insight, called on people in the EU to sign long-term contracts ahead of time rather than purchasing LNG as needed. "As China's economic recovery drives up gas demand and worldwide events send prices skyrocketing, Europe can no longer cling to the illusion of on-demand LNG.", "To secure gas supply this winter, they must make a concerted effort to shred their reliance on short-term, risky LNG purchases.", 'The Independent' reports that much of the world's gas is transported by pipeline, while liquid natural gas (LNG) is also transported by ship around the world. "It is crucial they focus on building strong partnerships, improving infrastructure and securing supply chains, so Europe can safeguard its energy security while working towards its longer-term decarbonisation goals.", Dr Matthew Chadwick, Lead research analyst at Cornwall Insight, via 'The Independent' .
