Last week, Hunter was indicted on federal firearm charges accusing him of lying about his drug use in order to purchase a firearm in 2018. The case against Hunter sets the stage for a potential high-profile trial heading into the 2024 presidential election. Al Jazeera reports that Hunter was expected to make a plea deal with prosecutors on misdemeanor charges for failing to pay taxes on time and the gun charge against him. However, the deal which Republicans had decried as a "sweetheart deal," fell apart after being questioned by the judge overseeing the case.
