Caption: Massive Data Breach Impacts HCA Healthcare Network. HCA Healthcare, responsible for 180 hospitals in the Britain and the U.S., says that 11 million people might have had their personal data stolen in a data breach. Fox News reports that the hacker posted samples of the data online, including addresses, phone numbers, emails and birth dates. The healthcare provider said that the stolen data included information on scheduled appointments and listed medical departments involved. On July 11, the hacker reportedly dumped a file online that included nearly 1 million records from HCA's San Antonio division. Fox News reports that the breach could rank in the top five largest data breaches reported by healthcare institutions. In 2015, Anthem Inc suffered the worst data breach to date, which impacted 79 million people. In the most recent incident involving HCA, the hacker attempted to sell the stolen data and also made an attempt to extort the healthcare provider. Fox News reports that the hacker claimed to have stolen 27.7 million records and gave the company a July 11 deadline. Following news of the hack, HCA said that it would offer credit monitoring and identity theft protection, while cautioning patients to be on guard. HCA reportedly treats 37 million patients every year across a massive network that includes surgery and urgent care centers in addition to hospitals.
