Caption: Shane MacGowan dies aged 65. The singer-songwriter passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning surrounded by his wife, Victoria May Clarke, and his family. ”It is with the deepest sorrow and heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of SHANE MACGOWAN.” “Shane died peacefully at 3am this morning (30 November, 2023) with his wife Victoria and family by his side. Prayers and the last rites were read which gave comfort to his family. Further details will be announces shortly but the family ask for privacy at this very sad time.” Clarke, who married MacGowan in 2018, also paid tribute to the musician on Instagram, calling him "the love of (her) life”. "I am blessed beyond words to have met him and to have loved him and to have been so endlessly and unconditionally loved by him and to have had so many years of life and love and joy and fun and laughter and so many adventures.” "There's no way to describe the loss that I am feeling and the longing for just one more of his smiles that lit up my world... You will live in my heart forever.” MacGowan has suffered from series of health issues over the years. Most recently, he was admitted to St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin, Ireland in June for an unspecified infection and eventually discharged last week. The unruly rocker kicked off his music career in the 1970s in the punk band The Nipple Erectors, also known as the Nips, before forming the Celtic punk band The Pogues in 1982. They are best known for their 1987 festive folk hit, Fairytale of New York, featuring Kirsty MacColl. In the 1980s they earned huge critical acclaim and cult status thanks to MacGowan's poetic lyrics, distinctive look, and wild personality - with their first three albums, Red Roses for Me, Rum Sodomy & the Lash, and If I Should Fall from Grace with God regarded as classics. He left the group in 1991 to forge a solo career and perform with a new band, The Popes, however, he returned to The Pogues ten years later in 2001.
