Caption: Co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, Yuji Naka, guilty of insider trading. Rock Paper Shotgun report that Naka has received a suspended sentence of two and a half years, as well as a hefty ¥173 million (around £948,000) fine for his illegal financial activities. Naka has been arrested twice, in November and December 2022 under Japan’s Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. He reportedly purchased ¥147 million (around £805,000) in shares of two development studios just before they both declared contracts to to develop mobile spin-offs Dragon Quest Tact and Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier. In that moment an employee of Square Enix, it’s thought that Naka had information from the inside in advance of the deals. He pleaded guilty in court. Naka had a lengthy career at Sega, before joining Square Enix working as lead programmer on the original Sonic The Hedgehog and eventually becoming the Sonic Team president.
