Caption: Japan's Population Decline Continued Breaking Records, in 2022. 'The Guardian' reports that all of Japan's 47 prefectures saw their populations decline in 2022 for the first time ever. Overall, the country's total population fell by almost 800,000 people. In response to the news, Japan's prime minister called the alarming downward trend a crisis and promised to take action. However, 'The Guardian' reports that previous national policies have failed to halt the ongoing population decline. According to data released on July 26, deaths hit a record high of over 1.56 million, compared to just 771,000 births. It is the first time that the number of newborns has dropped under 800,000 since records began. 'The Guardian' reports that even an all-time high influx of foreign residents has failed to slow the population decline. Japan's population has been declining for 14 consecutive years, reaching 122.42 million in 2022. "Our nation is on the cusp of whether it can maintain its societal functions.", Fumio Kishida, prime minister of Japan, via 'The Guardian'. Over half of Japan's municipalities are classified as depopulated districts. Amid the overall decline, about 300 small towns have boosted births through a combination of monetary payouts and policies meant to establish child-friendly environments.
