TechCrunch reports that the experiment is similar to a capability Google added to its app, Search widget and Assistant in 2020. The main difference between YouTube and Google’s alternative search options is the duration in which users must hum or whistle. Google's version requires users to hum or whistle for 15 seconds, while YouTube has shortened that time down to three seconds. After its release, Google explained that the function utilizes machine learning to match user input to a song's audio "fingerprint" or unique melody. TechCrunch reports that YouTube's new search function uses the same technology. SoundHouse and MusixMatch are two less popular music recognition apps that can also identify songs with user audio input like singing or humming.
