Headline: St. Elmo's Fire Lights Up Florida As Hurricane Idalia Hit

Caption: **RAW VIDEO** This video footage, captured by a member of the 50th Air Refuelling Squadron at MacDill Air Force Base during an evacuation in preparation for Hurricane Idalia on Tuesday (29August2023), shows the rare weather phenomenon known as St. Elmo’s Fire. St. Elmo’s Fire occurs when luminous plasma is created in an atmospheric electric field. Conditions that can generate St. Elmo's fire are present during thunderstorms, when high-voltage differentials are present between clouds and the ground underneath. The nitrogen and oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere causes St. Elmo's fire to fluoresce with blue or violet light. Hurricane Idalia hit Florida on the morning of 30 August, prompting storm surges and flooding coastal communities in the North West of the state. Two people’s deaths have been blamed on the storm, which moved north to Georgia.
