Caption: Workshop 4.0, the HES-SO Valais-Wallis’ School of Engineering (HEI) in Switzerland, and Les Celliers de Sion’s Aperobot is the first robot that can pour you a glass of wine. The bot was first unveiled in 2020 but most recently wowed visitors to the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva earlier in July 2023 - where it was a star attraction. Workshop 4.0 founder Nicolas Fontaine says of the reaction to the robot, “People really liked it, and I must say that the aperitif robot added a fun and friendly touch to the event. "It's a great way of approaching the theme of robots in a different way and promoting this field, our products and our project." “I think it was also one of the most photographed robots because it's so much fun to watch it work and people want to show later what they see." The researchers developed the Human-Machine-Interface used to process drink orders, the weighing electronics for filling the glasses, and the high-level control logic for the robot that chooses the correct wine glass or changes an empty bottle. So next time you visit a trendy wine bar, you might find that yourself toasting your sommelier by saying ro-bottoms up!.
