Caption: HBO Cancels 'The Idol' After Just 1 Season. NBC reports that HBO's controversial series, 'The Idol,' will not be renewed after just one season on air. According to an HBO spokesperson, the show by Sam Levinson and Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye will not be making a return. "After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to move forward with a second season." "We're grateful to the creators, cast and crew for their incredible work.", HBO spokesperson, via NBC. On July 2, the five-episode series, which starred Tesfaye as a shady club owner, was brought to a conclusion. NBC reports that 'The Idol' was fraught with controversy from its production through its release. In March, 'Rolling Stone' published a report citing sources who claimed the production had "gone wildly, disgustingly off the rails". Other publications also criticized the show after its release, with 'Playlist' calling it "gross and sexist," while 'Vulture' said it felt like "faint rape-fantasy porn". "How ever you're feeling watching that scene, whether it's discomfort, or you feel gross, or you feel embarrassed for the characters, it's all those emotions adding up to: This guy is in way over his head, this situation is one where he is not supposed to be here.", Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, via 'GQ' Interview. However, NBC reports that despite the controversy, the show managed to rank among Max'smost-watched series of the summer. THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
