During the night-time intercept, the U.S. claims the PRC pilot flew in an unsafe and unprofessional manner, and demonstrated poor airmanship by closing with uncontrolled excessive speed, flying below, in front of, and within 10 feet of the B-52, putting both aircraft in danger of collision. U.S. officials said they are concerned the pilot was unaware of how close he came to causing a collision. Tensions between the U.S. and allies and China have been growing in the Indo-Pacific region - with Chinese and Filipino boats clashing in contested waters this month.
