Caption: How to look after your mental health during pregnancy. While it is natural for pregnant women to feel emotional, anxious or stressed, it is important to focus on protecting your mental health during this time. Sophie Harris, pregnancy and postnatal psychotherapist and expert speaker at The Baby Show, has shared her tips for maintaining positive mental health during pregnancy. Be kind to yourself: It is important to cut yourself some slack when you are feeling down. ”When you are struggling, practice self-compassion by giving yourself the same kindness you would give to a friend," Sophie says. Stay connected: It can be easy to isolate yourself during pregnancy, especially if you don't have friends who have children, but connecting with loved ones can do you a world of good. ”Loneliness can worsen anxiety and mood issues. Seek meaningful connections with pregnant mums whether through existing friendships, antenatal classes, or apps like Peanut or Bumble BFF.” Take shortcuts: It is important to know that you can (and should) take breaks during your pregnancy. ”Pregnancy uses a lot of energy. Prioritise tasks and conserve energy for what truly matters. It's okay to lower standards in other areas temporarily to maintain balance and focus on your self-care.” Breathe: When you feel tense, take time to breathe deeply. ”Taking deep belly breaths will help you lower stress and reduce physical tension in your body. Inhale through your nose for four counts, then exhale for eight counts through your mouth. Repeat ten times to ease physical tension and regain control.” Movement: Moving your body is an effective and healthy way to improve your mood. ”Engage in gentle exercise to boost mood and overall well-being during pregnancy. Consult a healthcare professional for guidance if you are unsure about your physical limitations.” Seek professional support: If your low mood persists, it never hurts to talk to a professional. ”If you're experiencing persistent low mood or anxiety, consider therapy or contacting your GP to help navigate these challenges and find enjoyment in pregnancy.” THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
