Canada’s Election Shakes Up House, But Liberals Stay in Power. Canada’s federal election didn’t bring a change in government—but it delivered plenty of surprises. Preliminary results show 17% of seats in the House of Commons changed hands, nearly double the turnover from 2021. The total number of seats also rose to 343, reflecting population shifts. Three party leaders lost their own ridings. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, once favoured to become prime minister, was unseated in Ontario. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh came third in B.C. and resigned while Green co-leader Jonathan Pedneault finished fifth in Quebec. Meanwhile, the Liberals staged a major comeback, now led by Mark Carney—who became an MP for the first time.
