Three Dead and Two Missing as Floods Devastate Southern France. Severe thunderstorms in the Var region of southeastern France have resulted in three deaths and widespread flooding, according to reports. Two of the victims were an elderly couple whose car was swept away by floodwaters in the seaside town of Le Lavandou, France 24 reports. A third victim was found drowned in their vehicle in the commune of Vidauban, authorities confirmed. Le Lavandou and Bormes-les-Mimosas experienced the worst of the storms, with severe damage reported in both areas. Mayor Gil Bernardi described the destruction in Le Lavandou, where roads, bridges, and essential services were knocked out, leaving parts of the town inaccessible. Power and water outages were also reported in Cavaliere, where 250mm of rain fell within an hour, leading to further chaos. In Cavaliere, a parking lot collapsed, prompting dozens of rescues by emergency services. Around 200 firefighters and 35 gendarmes have been deployed to manage the flood response and rescue operations in the affected areas. Meteo-France placed the region under an orange alert for rain, flooding, and thunderstorms, with recorded rainfall exceeding 10cm by 10am local time. As cleanup efforts continue, local authorities are focused.
