What began as a quest for safer urban travel has become one of the most unique theme park attractions in the world.
The Shweeb Racer, a self-driving, race-style monorail at New Zealand’s Velocity Valley, was created by Geoff Barnett, an English teacher in Tokyo who wanted a safer way to commute after several close calls while cycling.
His idea led to a human-powered monorail system, which gained traction and earned a $1 million grant from Google’s Project 10^100 in 2010.
The Shweeb Racer is the only pedal-powered monorail track in the world. Riders recline in aerodynamic pods suspended from an overhead track and pedal like on a recumbent bicycle. The 600-meter circuit includes sharp 60-degree bends and allows speeds of up to 50 km/h, blending exercise with excitement. Visitors have described the ride as exhilarating and fun, praising the unique experience.
