Streeting Floats NI Cuts And New North Sea Drilling. Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has suggested cutting employers’ National Insurance contributions to encourage businesses to hire more young people. In an interview with the Sunday Times, Streeting said targeted tax incentives could help tackle rising youth unemployment and make firms more willing to take on younger workers. He also argued that some new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea should be allowed, saying it could generate additional tax revenue. Since leaving the cabinet earlier this month, Streeting has increasingly distanced himself from policies pursued by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Streeting has already called for a future return to the European Union and proposed what he describes as a “wealth tax”. The comments come as speculation continues over Labour’s future leadership, with Streeting confirming he would stand in any contest to replace Starmer.
