Gabrielle Morse, a specialist dietitian at Nuffield Health at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, has shared her expert tips for mindful drinking. Think about your weekly units. Firstly, it's important to keep track of how much alcohol you drink each week. The NHS recommends that you drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week, spread across 3 days or more. That's around 6 medium (175ml) glasses of wine, or 6 pints of 4% beer. Be aware of when and what you've eaten around drinking. "Alcohol consumption can have a deleterious effect on gut health - drinking heavily over a short space of time can have a deleterious effect on your gut microbiome. Keep the meals you eat as diverse as possible with plant-based foods.". Stay hydrated. The main reason you feel ill the following day after drinking alcohol is because you are dehydrated. "Try ordering non-alcohol options such as order lime and sodas, spritzers and water with your alcoholic drinks to keep hydrated and focus on rehydrating the next day.". Be intentional. To avoid drinking too much, try to set a certain number of drinks you will have that day. If you want to avoid the dreaded hangover, or just don't feel like drinking, you could opt for a non-alcoholic drink.
