Tesla Sales Plunge Across Europe Amid Rising EV Competition and Backlash Against Musk. Tesla saw a 67% sales drop in Denmark, 74% in the Netherlands, 33% in Portugal, 81% in Sweden, and 59% in France, according to data from local trade groups. One of the contributing factors to Tesla’s declining European sales is CEO Elon Musk’s controversial political stances, which have led to protests and backlash, especially in markets like Germany and the UK. Musk’s support for far-right political candidates and his ties to the Trump administration may be driving European buyers away from Tesla, leading to a loss of customer trust. Competition from other automakers, particularly the Chinese brand BYD, is intensifying. BYD is on track to surpass Tesla as the world’s largest EV maker this year, contributing to Tesla’s declining market share. Analysts predict that Tesla’s full-year sales could continue to fall, with a disastrous second quarter looming, following the struggles in the first quarter of 2025. Tesla’s European sales dropped by 36% during the first quarter of 2025, even as overall EV sales in the region rose by 24%, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. This decline follows Tesla’s first annual sales drop in 2024 and the biggest quarterly global sales drop in its history, which saw net income fall by 71%, forcing the company to rely on the sale of regulatory credits.
