Canada Looks to Europe as Tensions Simmer with Trump. Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly says the country has been “over reliant on the U.S. for too long” and is now seeking closer ties with the UK and European Union. “We’re the most European of all non-European countries,” she told the BBC. Her comments come after a meeting in Washington between Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Donald Trump, aimed at resetting strained relations 
Trump has recently imposed tariffs on Canadian auto, steel, and aluminium exports, and even suggested Canada should become a U.S. state. Joly said the meeting was a “good start,” but warned of unpredictability from the White House. Canada, she added, is committed to asserting its sovereignty and shaping a new trade and security partnership.
