Santander to Close 95 Branches as Customers Shift to Digital Banking. Santander has announced plans to close 95 UK branches, putting 750 jobs at risk, as more customers switch to digital banking. Starting in June, the closures will affect almost a quarter of Santander’s network, reducing its branches from 444 to 349. Additionally, hours will be reduced at 36 branches, and front counters removed from 18 others as part of the restructuring. Santander cites a two-thirds rise in digital transactions since 2019, alongside a similar decline in branch use, for the decision. To support affected areas, 95 community bankers will visit local facilities like libraries weekly to assist customers. Despite closures, Santander plans to expand ‘work cafés’, offering banking services and workspaces, with five now open in the UK. Consumer group Which? criticised the move, calling it a blow to customers who rely on cash and need faster rollout of banking hubs Under UK rules, banks must ensure reasonable access to cash remains and provide shared hubs where needed before closures. Link has identified 19 locations where banking hubs may replace Santander branches to maintain local access to services.
