Al Carns Rejects Role In Burnham Government. Former defence minister Al Carns has turned down an offer to join Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government, saying concerns over defence funding remain unresolved. Carns resigned from the previous government alongside former defence secretary John Healey in a dispute over military spending. He said accepting a ministerial post now would suggest that fight was over, when he still believes more investment is needed to meet the UK's security challenges. However, Carns welcomed Burnham's decision to appoint Healey as chancellor saying he trusted his former boss to deliver the increased defence funding they had both argued for. Carns said he would continue pressing for higher military spending from the back benches.
