Expert reveals how much water we should be drinking in summer. As the temperatures have been on the rise in the U.K., hydration is more important than ever. Dr Joshua Berkowitz, Medical Director at IVBOOST UK, shares his expertise and tips on how to stay hydrated during the warmer months. ”Water is a vital component of our bodies, making up about 60% of our total body weight. It plays a critical role in various bodily functions, including regulating body temperature, lubricating joints, transporting nutrients, removing waste and supporting cellular functions.” The expert continues, "Water helps dissipate heat through sweat, keeping our bodies cool and preventing us from overheating, ensuring that metabolic processes run smoothly." How much water should we be drinking? During the summer, many of us spend more time outside doing activities and generally being more active, which means we need to drink more water than usual to stay hydrated. ”The amount of water an individual requires can vary based on factors such as age, gender, weight, activity level and also climate. During the summer months, increased physical activity and higher temperatures can lead to greater fluid loss through sweat, necessitating even higher water intake. Adults should drink between 2-3 litres of water a day and this can include herbal teas and juices.” "It is essential to drink water consistently throughout the day, rather than waiting until you feel thirsty, as thirst is an indicator that you are already dehydrated.” The medical director warns that if you don't drink enough water throughout the day, you run the risk of dehydration. ”Dehydration happens when the body lacks sufficient fluids, often due to inadequate water intake and it can significantly affect our health and organs. Acute dehydration can result from extended physical activity, exposure to extreme heat or simply not drinking enough water.” He adds, "Indicators of dehydration include intense thirst, dark yellow urine, muscle fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, lips and eyes, urinating less than four times a day and overall fatigue." If you find it difficult to drink water throughout the day, there are a few things you can do to stay hydrated. ”Drink plenty of water to rehydrate quickly, or consider having an oral rehydration solution, which replenishes electrolytes lost through dehydration. Consuming foods with high water content like fruits and vegetables also helps. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as they can exacerbate dehydration. Rest and cool down if dehydration is caused by heat or exertion." The expert also recommends The Hydration Drip from IV Boost U.K.
