Designs have been unveiled for a semi-submersible that takes passengers above and below the ocean.
The concept boat, named the Platypus, mirrors its namesake by spending time both above and below the water.
The innovative vessel allows up to five passengers to enjoy under-the-sea gazing without actually diving into the water. The boat features a movable 'basket' that can be lowered below the water's surface, enabling underwater exploration while remaining seated motorcycle-style.
The project has just received a zero-emission boost thanks to a new partnership between Platypus Craft and electric outboard manufacturer Evoy.
The design ensures that underwater adventurers don't need prior diving experience or training. An onboard compressor supplies air to special facemasks via retractable hoses. For those who wish to dive further, traditional diving gear can be stowed onboard. The basket is equipped with six air tanks and oil-less Nardi Compressori compressors for breathing air, providing an accessible and comfortable underwater experience.
Platypus Craft has already launched a prototype in the Mediterranean, equipped with two of Evoy’s Twin Outboard Breeze electric motor systems, delivering over 240 horsepower. The motors are powered by two 63-kilowatt batteries, enabling a top speed of 25 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots above water. When the basket is lowered, the boat travels between three and five knots, allowing passengers to enjoy marine life at a leisurely pace for around 30 to 80 nautical miles.
The catamaran hulls of the Platypus facilitate easy lowering of the basket and provide ample space on board for passengers to walk around. The rear of the vessel has enough space to double as a diving board, offering an additional option for those who want to swim during their journey.
Evoy’s electric motor systems are a significant feature of this partnership, providing zero-emission propulsion that reduces pollution, fuel slicks, and bilge water. The quiet operation of the electric motors minimises noise pollution, benefiting marine life both above and below the water.
The two companies are continuing to develop the semi-submersible boat, with early 2025 set as the target year for its launch. Platypus Craft plans to deploy the twin Evoy Outboard Breeze, 120+ horsepower each, in their Yacht Edition craft, promising an eco-friendly and innovative way to explore the underwater world.
