Grocery Prices Rise 4.7%, But Shopper Visits Surge Amid Inflation. Grocery prices have risen 4.7% compared to last year, marking the highest supermarket inflation since March. This increase is up from 4.1% last month and 3.8% in April, according to data from analysts Kantar. Despite rising prices, British consumers made 490 million trips to the supermarket last month, the highest since March 2020. Grocery sales grew by 4.1% over the four weeks leading up to June 15, compared to the same period last year. However, the average spend per trip decreased by 3p to £23.89, balancing out the higher frequency of visits. As temperatures soared, shoppers bought 2,400 packs of strawberries every minute over the last month. Sales of exotic fruits like mangoes and blueberries grew by 27% and 10%, respectively. Overall grocery volumes declined by 0.4% over the past four weeks, marking the first year-on-year drop of the year. Kantar suggests the decline in grocery volumes may partly be influenced by growing health trends, including weight-loss drugs. The continued rise in grocery costs highlights the ongoing inflationary pressures felt by consumers.
