School Shooting Prompts Philippine Push for Under-16 Social Media Ban. The Philippines is considering tighter restrictions on social media for minors following a school shooting in Zamboanga City that was livestreamed by the student involved. Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian has called for legislation banning children under 16 from using social media, warning about the circulation of livestreamed violence and graphic material. The proposal would build on an already growing debate in the Philippines over limiting children's access to social platforms, amid concerns about cyberbullying and harmful content. The latest push comes after the Grade 8 student used a body-worn camera to livestream the August 18 attack, which killed another student before the shooter took his own life. Parents in Zamboanga said graphic images, videos and conflicting accounts of the shooting spread rapidly through social media and group chats, increasing anxiety as the incident unfolded. The government is also examining the role of firearms, proposing tougher penalties for gun owners whose weapons are accessed by minors and a review of existing regulations on firearms. The shooting has therefore widened the discussion beyond traditional school security measures, stressing that prevention must also include identifying and supporting vulnerable students.
