How ‘Exercise Snacks’ Can Boost Your Health in Just Minutes a Day. Forget hour-long gym sessions—science says “exercise snacks” might be all you need to improve your health. These are brief bursts of movement—anything from climbing stairs to dancing, that last between 30 seconds and 10 minutes. Coined in 2007 by Harvard cardiologist Dr. Howard Hartley, the term has gained scientific traction. A 2022 study found that doing just three 15- to 30-second bursts of stair-climbing or cycling daily improved fitness in inactive adults. Even more impressive, a 2023 study of over 22,000 people showed that just 3.4 to 3.6 minutes of vigorous daily movement, done in short spurts, cut cancer risk by up to 18%. Bumping that to 4.5 minutes reduced the risk by over 30%. It’s not just your body that benefits. A 2024 study found these mini-workouts also reduce the risk of dementia, especially for those who previously did little to no exercise. Trainer Michael Betts sums it up: “Doing anything is better than doing nothing.”
