EU Orders Meta To Open WhatsApp To Rival AI Chatbots. The European Union has ordered Meta to restore access to WhatsApp for artificial intelligence chatbots operated by rival companies. The European Commission said the move is necessary while it investigates whether Meta unfairly restricted competition by blocking third-party AI assistants from using WhatsApp’s business platform. Regulators argue that limiting access could cause serious harm to competition in the fast-growing AI market. As an interim measure, Meta has been given five working days to reinstate access for competing AI services under the same conditions that previously existed. The investigation began after Meta restricted access to general-purpose AI assistants other than its own Meta AI service. Meta has strongly criticised the decision, accusing the European Commission of regulatory overreach and confirming it plans to appeal. The temporary order will remain in place while the EU’s wider antitrust investigation continues.
