Prison Population Falls by Over 2,000 in One Week as Overcrowding Plan Takes Effect. The prison population in England and Wales has dropped by over 2,000 in just one week due to a new government plan aimed at reducing overcrowding. A temporary early release scheme, which began on September 10th, allows some prisoners to be released after serving 40% of their sentence, instead of the usual 50%. This week’s group included those serving less than five years, while those with longer sentences will be considered later in October. However, serious offenders such as killers, rapists, and terrorists are excluded from the scheme. The prison population has fallen from 88,521 to 86,333. The release plan has raised concerns about public safety and the rehabilitation of prisoners. Chief Inspector of Prisons, Charlie Taylor, warned that prisons risk becoming a "revolving door" as some inmates may not be fully prepared for life outside. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood defended the plan, stating it was necessary to prevent the collapse of the criminal justice system.
