Argentina Launches Legal Action Over Falklands Oil Exploration. Argentina has launched legal action seeking to stop oil and gas exploration north of the Falkland Islands, escalating its dispute with the UK. President Javier Milei's government said it had lodged a request with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, challenging activity authorised by Britain. The move follows Milei's demand for the Sea Lion oilfield project to be scrapped and threats of economic sanctions against companies operating near the islands. UK Foreign Office Minister Uma Kumaran accused Argentina of "economic coercion" and said Britain would support the people of the Falkland Islands and companies operating there. The dispute has heightened tensions over sovereignty of the self-governing British territory, which Argentina calls Las Malvinas. The Sea Lion field, around 130 miles from the islands, is estimated to contain 1.7 billion barrels of oil.
